So, if you want to be one of them, you can start with proper planning, patience, and the right guidelines.
You will be surprised to know that currently, YouTube has more than 250 crore active users worldwide. That means, if you can create the right content, your video can reach a huge audience.
In today’s article, I will explain everything you need to know about starting a YouTube channel step by step.
Step 1: Create a YouTube Channel
Create a Google (Gmail) Account:
To open a YouTube channel, you first need a Gmail account. If you already have one, just use that. If not, go to gmail.com and create a new one.
Then follow the steps below to create your channel.

- Go to youtube.com and log in.
- Click on your profile picture in the top right corner
- Click on the “Create a channel” option.
- Enter your channel name (personal name or brand name).
- Click the “Create Channel” button — that’s it, your channel is ready!
Now set up your channel.
Things you should do right after creating your channel:
Channel Art (Banner): Create an attractive banner. You can easily make one for free using Canva.com. The size should be 2560 × 1440 pixels.
Profile Picture: Add a clear and clean picture — your own picture or logo. Besides, you can now easily create an attractive logo using AI.
Channel Description: Clearly write what your channel is about and when videos will be uploaded. Usually, a standard description is 1000 characters.
Channel Username:This is the real identity of your channel.
Note: Sometimes the name you used for your channel may not be available as a username. In that case, try adding numbers before or after the name.
Add Links: Add links to Instagram, Facebook, Tiktook, or your website.
Step 2: Choose a Niche (Most Important Decision)
What Is a Niche and Why Does It Matter?
A niche is the specific topic or category of your channel. For example, cooking, technology, product reviews, personal finance, motivation, etc.
That means focusing on a specific topic is a Niche.
Channels that make videos on all topics usually take time to grow. But channels that create content deeply on a specific topic gain audience trust and grow faster.

- Make an attractive thumbnail because people click after seeing the thumbnail.
Step 4: Strategies to Grow Your Channel (SEO)
What Is YouTube SEO?
YouTube SEO means creating and publishing videos so that people can easily find them when they search. It also helps the YouTube algorithm clearly understand your video’s topic and purpose.
Here’s what to focus on:
Proper Keyword Research

- Type your topic into the YouTube search bar and look at the autocomplete suggestions. This shows you what people are actually searching for.
- Use TubeBuddy or vidIQ extensions (both have useful free features).
- Check Google Trends to see what topics are trending right now.
Use these insights to choose the right keywords for your videos.
How to Write a Title

- Keep the main keyword in the title.
- Use curious language.
- Keep it within 60 characters.
Example: “5 best ways to earn 2000 dollars a month (2026)”
How to Write a Description
- Write a summary of the video in the first 2–3 lines (this appears in search).
- Use keywords naturally.
- Ask viewers to subscribe to the channel.
- Add Social Media links.
- Add 10–15 tags related to the topic of the video.
Thumbnail Creation Tips
- Use bright colors.
- Write the main topic in large letters.
- You can easily make it with Canva or Adobe Express.
- Upload at least 2–3 videos per week.
- Follow a specific schedule.
Step 5: YouTube Monetization — All Ways to Earn Money
Here comes the real fun. There are multiple ways to earn money from YouTube, and successful YouTubers earn in many ways at the same time.
Method 1: YouTube Partner Program (YPP) — AdSense Income

This is the most popular method, and most of us are already familiar with it. Once you meet the requirements and apply, YouTube shows ads on your videos and you earn from those ads.
Eligibility requirements:
- 1,000 subscribers
- 4,000 Watch Hours in the last 12 months
- Or 10 million Shorts Views in the last 90 days
- A Google AdSense account.
Important: From February 1, 2027, you’ll need 8,000 watch hours in the past year, or 20 million Shorts views in the past three months. Keep this in mind.
How much can you earn?
Your earning depends on the audience’s country, your Niche, and how long the ad was watched. Generally, you can earn around $1 to $5 per 1,000 views. It can also be higher for technology, business, or finance-related channels.
Method 2: Sponsorship
When you promote a company’s product or service in your video, that company pays you a specific amount of money. This is usually contract-based.
How to get sponsorships:
- Email companies directly
- Use influencer marketing platforms (like AspireIQ or Influencer.co)
- Once your channel grows, companies will often reach out to you themselves
Earning: Even small channels (10,000–50,000 subscribers) can get $50 to $500 in sponsorship per video.
Method 3: Affiliate Marketing
Share product links in your video description or pinned comments. When someone buys through your link, you earn a commission.
Popular Affiliate Programs:
- Amazon Associates (Amazon products)
- Stay22 (travel affiliate program)
- Hostinger / Bluehost (Web Hosting)
- Skillshare / Udemy /Coursera (online courses)
- ClickBank, ShareASale, impact (international)
Strategy:Make product review videos and include the affiliate link for that product. This works in almost every niche.
Method 4: Sell Your Own Products or Services
If you have a skill or product, YouTube can be your best advertising platform.
What can you sell?
- Online courses (Udemy, Teachable, your own website)
- E-books or guides
- Print on demand (T-shirts, mugs, etc. — Printful or Redbubble)
- Consulting or Coaching sessions
- Freelance services (graphic design, video editing, etc.)
Method 5: Channel Membership and Super Thanks
YouTube gives its creators a great feature where viewers can support you directly.
- Channel Membership: Viewers pay a monthly fee and get special benefits — such as exclusive videos, badges, and special emojis.
- Super Thanks / Super Chat: During Live Streams, viewers can pay money to highlight their messages. This is a big source of income for Streamers.
Eligibility: You must be in the YPP.
Method 6: YouTube Shorts Monetization
YouTube Shorts can now be monetized separately.
- Short videos within 60 seconds
- If they go viral, they can quickly get millions of views
- Income comes from the Shorts Fund and advertisements
- The best way to grow subscribers quickly
Method 7: Crowdfunding and Fan Support
- Patreon: Viewers support you on a monthly basis.
- Ko-fi: A donation system like “buying a one-time coffee”.
- BuyMeCoffee: A similar platform.
If your viewers love your content, they will want to support you directly.
Method 8: Licensing and Media Usage
If your video goes viral, news media or television channels may pay you to use it. You can get this opportunity by registering on platforms like Jukin Media or ViralHog.
Step 7: Mistakes You Should Not Make
Many people start YouTube and fail because they make these mistakes:
- Starting without fixing a Niche — if you make videos about everything, you cannot establish yourself anywhere.
- Not being patient — if you are a beginner, keep in mind that you may earn almost nothing during the first 6 months. Many people quit at this stage.
- Violating copyright — using someone else’s music, images, or videos without permission can get your channel shut down.
- Ignoring Thumbnail and Title — even if the video is good, no one will click if the Thumbnail is bad.
- Ignoring viewers — reply to comments, ask for viewer opinions.
- Using clickbait —if the title and video content do not match, viewers lose trust.
Step 8: How to Find Content Ideas
If you run out of ideas, do this:
- Check the YouTube Trending Tab — see what is popular now
- Check Google Trends
- Facebook Groups and Reddit — see what questions people are asking
- Competitor channels — see which videos get more views, make that type in your own way
- Audience comments — see what kind of topics they want videos on.
- “People Also Ask” — you see this at the bottom when you search a topic on Google
My strategy that provides me with long-term visitors from Google –
I search Google with different keywords based on my channels’ niches. I analyze the video section to see what kind of videos are ranking and whether there are proper videos or not. When I find a perfect keyword, I create a video with it. This way, I get organic visitors from Google on various videos on my channel, which helps my channel grow.
Step 9: Understand Analytics

Go to YouTube Studio and check your Analytics. Here’s what you’ll find:
- Views & Watch Time: See your total views and watch time for the day, last 7 days, last 28 days, last 3 months, last year, or any custom date range you choose.
- Audience Retention: How long viewers are watching your videos — this is the most important metric.
- Click-Through Rate (CTR): How many people click after seeing the Thumbnail.
- A/B Testing: YouTube now allows testing multiple titles and thumbnails.
- Traffic Source: Where people are coming from (search, suggestions, social media).
- Demographics: The age and country of your audience.
YouTube analytics will help you make the right decisions about your channel.
Step 10: Long-Term Success Strategy
Do not just build a channel, build yourself as a brand. People do not just watch videos, they connect with the person.
- Stay active on other platforms
Share your content on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok alongside YouTube. This brings organic traffic back to your channel. - Build a community
Use the YouTube Community Tab. Post polls, share photos, and talk to your audience regularly. - Collaborate with others
Make videos with other YouTubers in your niche. Both channels benefit by reaching each other’s audience.
Conclusion
Here are the things you must remember to successfully earn money from YouTube:
- Choose the right Niche — this is the biggest decision.
- Upload videos consistently — you cannot stop after doing it occasionally.
- Maintain quality — one good video is better than ten average videos.
- Love your viewers — solve their problems, not just focus on views.
